LABYRINTH On our small island in the South Pacific there now exists a large outdoor labyrinth that is very conducive to spiritual evolution. It not only guides one back and forth, but like life itself - it has its ups and downs. Its single path leads through the four quadrants similar to the world famous 12th century sacred labyrinth found in the Cathedral in Chartres, France and at the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. In the Middle Ages, 22 of the 80 Gothic cathedrals in Europe contained a labyrinth. This 50-foot diameter labyrinth is built on a gently sloping lawn on the crest of a hill of our peninsula surrounded by the blue peaceful tropical ocean. The 360-degree views are spectacular. To the south on a nearby island is a mile-high mountain range. To the west can be seen the native island where the Fijian people have lived for hundreds of years. To the north, on a nearby hillside, are a vast series of ancient rock designs that have aroused scientific curiosity similar to the speculation about Easter Island and Stonehenge. This labyrinth is located in one of the most inviting natural beauty settings for quiet meditation found anywhere in the world. The peninsula is called "Sunset Point" where often the late afternoon sky changes to the spectacular colors of red, orange, and gold. Following the custom of removing ones shoes when entering a holy place, the visitor may experience a unique sensation in the center of this labyrinth. There is a large flat stone on which one stands to meditate. People who have experienced the earth's vortex in Sedona, Arizona, claim they felt the same forces coming out of that center stone, but in an anticlockwise direction. Our small island of Nananu-I-Ra is "off-the-beaten-path" with a tranquil pace of life with no stores, no roads and no automobiles, making it an ideal location to experience the healing self-awareness and stress reducing properties of the labyrinth. This Sunset Point labyrinth was designed and built by Edward Morris on his tropical island peninsula where he and his wife Betty live five months each year. It was officially opened on 22 May 2004 during the blessing by the Reverend Pastor Temesia Dakui of the RakiRaki Circuit of the Methodist Church of Fiji. From the Prairie Labyrinth in Missouri, U.S.A., we find this commentary: The Woodlawn Memorial Park in Orlando, Florida, also has an outdoor labyrinth. Its chairman has this interesting observation: Why does the labyrinth attract people? Walking the labyrinth clears the mind and gives insight to one's spiritual journey. It calms people in the throes of life's transitions. It is a tool to guide healing, deeper self-knowledge, and empower creativity. It helps one find the inner self. It is a place to talk and pray to your God. To see Sunset Point Labyrinth pictured with others on the World Wide Web, go to www.veriditas.net.
